I just put down a new area rug with some padding underneath. My 1 year old beagle molly has been chewing the carpet and the padding underneath. I have tried all of the anti chew sprays, my dog acts like its topping on a sundae. She also like anything citrus and loves tobasco sauce. Nothings works! She has chew bones and a kong but prefers to chew soft cloth things like my couch and the carpet. She also chews everything wood or plastic. She is crated at night and when we are gone from home, but i cant crate her 24/7. How can i stop her from chewing up my carpet?

Answer
Find some old tea towels, tie them in knots, wet them down, put them in individual baggies and freeze them. When she begins to chew on something, give her a firm 'NO' in a hard, deep voice, not loud. Then take her to the kitchen and give her one of the knotted towels.
This is a training exercise that I teach in Puppy Kindergarten for teething. But because the towel gets soft quickly it might help with your dog. If it's an old towel, she can chew it up and then you just throw it away.
You can also try soaking it in bouillon or making bouillon ice cubes or just ice cubes. I know that she is not teething at this time but some of my students are still using these things for chew toys. They tell me that it has saved all sorts of furniture from destruction.
It's inexpensive, give it a try.
Good Luck

What is the best way to get a puppy from using the bathroom in the house?

The Lost S

I have a crate that I put him in when I'm gone but, when I'm here I let him roam free and take him out a lot. He uses the bathroom outside and I treat him but then he'll use it whenever he pleases inside. I tried the whole rubbing the nose in it and put him outside afterwards but he doesn't get it. I'm tired of cleaning up his messes and carpet sucks for that. He's really young so I guess I'll just have to be patient. I read other responses to the same question I'm asking and they said just to use a crate. My puppy is a whiner and there is no way I'm just going to leave him in the crate 24/7. He sleeps with me and anytime away from me he whines. I can't even take a shower without him having to be there in the room. Also, he bites alot. He has chew toys but won't stop nibbling on u when u try to pet him and he's been snapping in my face lately. What do I do? I go a little terriorizer with an overactive bladder on my hands. HELP!

Answer
Please don't rub his nose in it. It does not help matters. Take a paper towel or toilet paper to the mess with your puppy under your other arm let him/her see you remove the poop with the paper. Proceed outside with poop and pup. Put poop on the grass and pup on the grass. Repeat at least 4 times. Pup should begin to ask to be let outside to poop. You did not say what breed your pup is. Biting can be discouraged too. Place you hand gently around his snout when he bites say 'no' firmly. Wether he is biting out of aggression or excitation you also failed to mention. Either way, being constant with your pup will win the day for you and your friend.
Use of the crate:- you should only use it when you have to ie while your out. Playtoys should be given to the dog. You should not use the crate as a punishment zone as the pup will not want to be put there when you go out and will not see it as his bed. Once you have established better pooping behaviour crating should become unnecessary. He is probably crying when you go because they get abandonment issues. Leave a TV going for company. A loud ticking clock also gives comfort. But toys often helps this problem as well. This problem should disappear also as he gets older and used to household occurances. Dogs work best when they know whats going on and what time it will happen each day. As for him being in the room when your are showering really just what do you want from your friend he doesnt care wether you are clothed or not and is only trying to establish the routine of his new home. Love him and the puppy time will be over before you know it and you will wonder what to do with this now lathargic dog that just lolls around doing stuff all.

I've been looking for a dog crate for my beagle/ basset hound but everywhere is so expensive! I bought a mesh one from walmart but she ripped that right up. Even Walmart for a cheap one is min 50 dollars for crappy quality! I keep looking on ebay but they are all too expensive too. If anyone knows of any place to buy a good quality dog crate for less money please let me know. Thanks!

Answer
You could try posting it as a need on freecycle.org...you could post a "want to buy" on craigslist.com, or you could try local rummage sales. Do any of your local radio stations have a program to buy/sell/trade items?

A crate is going to cost in the $50-$100 range for that size. I bought a nice one at Sportsman's Warehouse for my toy dog that was reasonably priced. Tractor Supply used to have the best prices on crates. Check out farm stores/hunting supply stores in your area for crates...they often have lower prices on pet supplies (and they are often much higher quality, as well).

Where can I get absorbent dog mats for airplane travel?

Vikky J.

I need to buy some absorbent material to put in my dog crate when we go to Japan. The flight is 12 hours so it needs to be really good because I know he will pee sometime along the way and I want him to be comfortable and not have to lay in it. I'm not sure what the best material would be to buy or where I can even get it. Any suggestions would be great.
