Why do people think you need to be the perfect owner?

Sammi

i see all these answers of people saying you need the best food(or even raw eww), read books, hire trainers, be ready to pay $10000 for a vet if needed, socialize dog, crate train them or they should just rehome them. theres so many dogs needing homes its not that easy. my town has no dog park, sells nothing but supermarket food, doesnt have trainers, and i dont own a crate, never read a dog book. guess what i live in a hick town full of happy healthy pets! my dog is very well behaved and was trained by me not a professional. i got her at 10 as a birthday present and will be 18 soon. so my question is why does everyone think dogs need to be in "perfect" homes when the alternative for many dogs would be death at the pound?
jen got what i meant with the rehome thing. i think most of you fall into my category "the average pet owner". and yes i agree there are some people on here that just dont get it with dogs. my dog had a seizure what do i do? that worries me when people dont know that means vet. the worst thing that my dog has had is a flea allergy. which i put about $150 into shots monthly flea pills and 2 rounds of steroids. so i consider myself lucky and hope my dog never has something i cant afford. i also
got lucky with the fact that my dog loves kids and other animals. if she was mean to a
toddler thats at my house every once in a while i would be driving a half hour to find a dog trainer. id do whats necessary and that i can which pretty much all of you would im sure. some people just dont have common sense and some people overreact. im done rambling thank you have fun with your doggys

Answer
you don't have to be a perfect pet owner. no one is perfect and incidents happen. you do need to have a good idea of what your doing to own a pet though. i've seen and heard of many people who are first time dog owners and have no idea what they are doing, but with a little advice and some reading up on the internet, they do fine. that does not make them perfect but they are trying and working to better themselves and that's all that matters.

Owning a dog for the first time?

Hi, i'm trying to purchase an American bulldog puppy for my kid, but i don't know a thing about purchasing a dog so i was wondering what are some things you need to do when you buy a dog. Like get a license? or how often do you take them to the vet to get their shots? and what kind of shots are need and how much they usually cost or anything else that might be required to own a dog. We recently bought a house and it has a very beautiful huge backyard so space is not a problem, and i have 3 kids so the dog will be very occupied, as in its exercise and what not.

I admire you for wanting to do research before purchasing or adopting. I'd try to adopt a dog from a shelter before I buy if that's possible. An American Bulldog isn't the greatest of choices for a first time owner but if you really do your research and talk to a reputable breeder in your area and spend time with them before you get one, maybe it'd be ok. but I've had lots of dogs in my life and wouldn't consider one especially if I had kids. Boxers can be nice dogs and they are sturdy too.
Good quality food can be pricey, don't buy the stuff in the grocery store or walmart. Good foods are Wellness, Innova, Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance, Orijen, Solid Gold. My fave is Wellness, not too much but very good quality. You can get it at Petco or a local animal feed store or Pet Supermarket or Pet supplies plus.
Vet bills, 3 times in the first few months for a pup. De worming and rabies and distemper/parvo/lepto./adenovirus and a bordetella vaccine all cost. I just had my dog for his one year check up and it was $192 with the shots. Neutering was over $230 and microchipping is $40. If you get a shelter dog, these are all included with the adoption fee so it's a good deal. You need a crate, bowls, a bed, toys, leash, collar, treats all to start with. A good book on house training is good too. Never hit or yell at a dog. Just positive reinforcement and reward. It works better. Exercise everyday, a good long walk is needed and companionship and love. You'd have to check with your local area as to licensing fees. A fence is a must with any dog. Good luck!
