Transporting large dog on plane?

Bookworm01

I may be moving to NYC from TX soon and am wondering how to transport my dog. She weighs about 60lbs. My concern is how would I get her to the plane? There is no way I can carry/push a kennel large enough to fit her through the airport. Is there a special entrance for pets that are flying? Would I have to walk her through the airport?

Answer
you get an appropriate sized airline-approved crate for your dog ... when you get to the airport you put the crate on one of those carts for luggage and you use that to push to the counter ... you need to see an agent when you are checking in a pet and not use online or self-serve kiosks ... and unless you have a disability, i am a small female and i moved two large dog crates myself all over the united states ... and if you need to ask someone to help you get the crate onto the cart, that is what you will have to do ... and while i have been told not to do this, i have walked my dogs into the airport and only put them in their crates when at the ticket agent desk ... i have been told that is not allowed but i do it anyways sometimes if we were flying all day ...

How can I get my dog to stop crying?

Nick M

Just moved into an apartment building in NYC. When I leave my apt, I always put my dog away in his crate/kennel because he gets into everything. He usually cries for a few minutes when I leave then he stops, I know this because I've stood outside a few times. Problem is, my neighbors are starting to complain saying he was howling for over 2 hrs the other night. I've tried everything! I tried putting him in 20 minutes before I leave so he can adjust, I leave a radio on in the room with him, put his toy and blanket in the crate with him. Nothing works, any suggestions would help! I love my apt and really don't want to get evicted! Thanks!

Answer
Well I was going to say radio or tv, toys and bones to pacify him. We practiced leaving one day with our dogs. We pretended to leave and when the dog started barking, we popped back inside and said "settle down" and when they did, we praised them. It taught them that leaving was no big deal. I guess you might look into a doggie day care of pet sitter, or dog walker, something like that. I wonder if you could set up a video camera and see what is setting off the barking. I agree with you, most dogs settle down after a few minutes. If you could figure out what sets him off, you could practice with that until it becomes no big deal.
