When ever i leave him at home he chews everything in sight. When we crate him, he goes to the bathroom in the crate. We take him out often but he still whizzes in the house. HELP!!

Answer
Most little dogs are notorious for being hard to house train, keep at it, take him out often. Believe me it will happen. With the crate, he may have been in the pet store for a long time or from a puppy mill. That destroys their sense of keeping their sleeping/eating area clean.

He may be bored at home, concidering the destruction. Try different types of toys that he can choose from like interactive (make noise when played with especially the ones that make noise if he just touches them) A lot of cat toys or human infant toys worked for my yorkie. Chew, toys something he can really get his teeth into are great too. Rope toys are good for interaction with you nad to assist with dental issues and you know how yorkies can have dental issues. Most important, exercise him as much as you can.

I have found Natures Miracle Bitter Spray kept my little guy from crewing extension cords, wicker baskets, coffee table legs etc.

Best of luck!

Is it best to try to say the lives of unwanted pets even if it means warehousing them for a long time?

Or, as the pound does, euthanize after only 10 days? What's a happy medium? I have some experience with this. I adopted a young walker hound that had lived in a no-kill for 2 1/2 out of the 3 years of her life. She was not badly treated, but her behavior was shocking. The first 6 months that I owned her, she spent most of her time compulsively jogging around in circles, and the rest of the time focused in escaping--she was an accomplished fence climber. If in the house, she peed and pooped everywhere, chewed everything she could get her mouth on, and was obsessed with getting food. When she killed a cat, I was ready to give up on her, but my kids begged me to give her one more chance. I did, and over time, she became a calm, wonderful pet. Examples of the same behaviors seem to be typical of pets living in a no-kill shelter for an extension amount of time--so is it best to euthanize unwanted pets after so much time.
I mean "save"

Answer
I think you're talking about re-habbing animals whose bad behavior was created by circumstance, either through apathy or ignorance.

People, many well meaning, select particular dogs because they are cute or they have interesting personalities or they've watched the Border Collies run the courses, etc. They don't figure in that the distinctive breeds have been focused on attaining specific traits for years.

You can't expect to take a high-energy breed to an apartment in town, crate him all day and expect him to be a lap dog when you get home in the evening. By the time the owner realizes "this isn't a good match" and tries to recoup their financial loss ("I paid good money for this dog") by selling it, before dumping it in a shelter or rescue, you have a very neurotic dog.

Let's use your Walker hound as an example. "Not badly treated" to me means well fed and sheltered. But...the behaviors you described scream to me that this dog was, at some significant point, in a situation that was so contrary to its instinct that it developed these behaviors. You've successfully rehabbed the dog.

The only viable alternative to keeping them warehoused ( a good term) at "no kill" shelters is rehabbing. "Warehousing" is not going to "save" or "fix" the dog in the mental condition you describe. I personally don't believe "any" life at all is better than "no life" (euthanasia) for these dogs.

It's sad, but I hope more people realize this before they rush into getting a particular puppy or dog without realizing what its instincts are going to be.
