Q. My husband is planning on building our dog a dog house for outside. We have great dane mix puppy only about 5 months old, he's far from being full grown so i'm not sure what his full grown measurements will be. How big should an average great danes dog house be? we've looked at a few designs and we want to build one with a door on the front left side and inside it has a little half wall kind of thing so he can go to the right side and be blocked from the wind and rain and everything else. any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Rescue Member - STOP JUDGING... anywhere in my question did i say i lock him outside all the time? No i did not. I love my dog and he is a great companion. did it ever occur to you that when i do put him outside on occasion, that i would like him to feel just as loved as if he was inside with me? have you ever had so much company that you want your dog outside so he doesn't bother them? i don't want to just put him out in my back yard, this house is for him to be in when he just can't be inside with me! Thank you for all your help!

I like the idea of a center wall so he can go from side to side whichever is better for him at the time.
Also, the height from the ground must be high, for a dane I'd say a foot with skirting around it to keep the wind out from under.
Don't use any cedar woods in the house not even some in the flooring. The temptation of it for repelling fleas isn't worth it as it doesn't do that great of a job to begin with plus the cedar isn't good for breathing in the odor and can cause asthma and even digestive problems.
He needs to be able to stand without his head touching the ceiling.
Bedding should not be straw. Find good crate/doghouse bedding with raised sides. They come in many sizes, thicknesses and such. They are not cheap. Try a catalog from Jeffers 1-800-Jeffers or a Tractor Supply or Agway.
You want the bedding to be washable with a zip off cover.
Also, throw in a few blankets in addition so he can make a nest to his liking.
You don't say your climate but with wanting the house to be two sided inside to get away from wind and rain I'm thinking you're not in southern CA or TX or FL.
I hope this is only for his comfort and protection while being outside during daytime hours on some days and that he will not be a 24/7 outside dog.

Kongs, gotta love the Kongs. My Basenjis get digestive upsets with basically ANY other kind of chew. Except bully sticks, but they power-chew through those in 15 minutes; hardly worth the money!.
And even though I initially dismissed it as a silly gimmick....ya know the little Kong treats, specifically designed to fit up inside the Kong? I got a free sample of one when I bought a new Kong for my newest adopted dog....gave it a try. And I'll be darned if they don't WORK better than anything else I've ever stuffed inside a Kong!!!
They actually STAY up there & my male Basenji will literally spend half a day trying to get it out. Makes the Kong officially the longest-lasting chew toy I can find! It's awesome, I'm sold....promptly went out & got a box of silly-gimmick Kong treats, by George.
I swear by my home-made flirt pole....as a great way to quickly exercise an active Cattledog mix, without having to go on a 10 mile jog. An hour or so, 2-3 times a day with the flirt pole and she's ready for a nap. Gets her running, jumping, twisting, turning and generally having a great time. The Basenjis like it too, but lose interest after about 15 minutes. Only cost $9....for a 5 foot length of PVC pipe, a 5 foot nylon clothesline and a de-stuffed "fox" toy I bought on clearance at Tractor Supply. By any measure, the best bang for the buck of any dog toy I've ever spent money on.
I keep a can of plain pumpkin in the pantry because I've seen it work its magic. Almost too good to be true.
Food- quite frankly, the only thing that keeps weight on my mill rescue girl, is Blue Wilderness. Anything that's not grain-free and she ends up with the runs & constantly regurgitates (NOT vomits, regurgitates) un-digested kibble, even hours after feeding. Other grain-free foods stop the diarrhea & regurgitation, but won't keep weight on her. Have tried EVO, Taste of the Wild & one other food I can't recall....but Blue Wilderness is the only thing that works. Sucks, too, because I can buy EVO & TOTW locally, but have to drive 70 miles to get Wilderness. :P
Oh yeah, back when I used to do obed/agility with my Boxer, I was in LOVE with my Cabana Crate. Now you can buy lightweight canvas crates in Wal Mart for $40 but back then you had to special order them and they weren't cheap. I always went to trials alone & HATED HATED lugging a heavy wire crate around, but I was too cheap & stubborn to buy the Cabana Crate, which was something like $150 back then! I finally relented, and spent the money, and could not believe what a wonderful difference it made LOL. Of course not 2 years later I retired that dog from any sort of competition & I still stubbornly refuse to part with my Cabana Crate (it's in my garage :).
