Pcsing with two dogs to Germany... Help!!!?

Amy

My husband has just re-enlisted for Germany, so i'm trying to figure out a couple of things. 1. When should he receive his orders. And how long after he gets them will we be leaving?( He is currently overseas, and will not return until July.) 2. we have two dogs. A 85 lb. German Shepard, and a 60 lb. boxer, how much would it cost us to have them fly on the same airline as us? Any and all information would be great. Only serious and knowledgeable answers please, Thank you!!

Answer
The cost for shipping a dog to Germany will depend on which airline you use, and their fees. Fees will vary based on the location shipping from and where you are arriving. That being said, when I shipped my dog to/from Germany it cost approximately $600 in 2001 (He weighed about 75 lbs). Check with the airlines for specific requirements on a shipping crate, but a general guideline is that the dog has to be able to stand in the crate.

Here is a link to Delta Airlines. It states that military members shipping a pet overseas get a 40% discount (that is new since I shipped). The link also has info on the shipping crate requirements. Be aware Delta states snub nosed breeds (Boxers) will be refused if the temperature is above 75F anywhere enroute (per the link).

Germany does restrict some breeds from import, however German Shepherds and Boxers are NOT on the list at present. Base restrictions may restrict your breed from on base. In that case you would have to live off-base. The second link is from the German Consulate listing the breeds restricted from shipment to Germany.

Good luck and enjoy your overseas assignment.

My dog is escaping from everything.?

We have a crate inside the house that he can escape from and we have an outdoor dog area. I have had to reinforce all the fencing, dig cinder blocks into the perimeter to stop him from digging out. He has now broken the clasp off the door of the outside kennel and forced the gate open. He bends the metal gate of the indoor crate and forces the door open. He's an 11 month old, 75 lbs mix from the Humane Society (we've had him since he was 8 weeks) who has decided that he will not be held back. It is driving me crazy. If we can't contain this dog, I don't think we can keep him. Any ideas?

Answer
Does he have enough to do? He is a young active dog, he needs to be thoroughly exercised and tired out each day. A dog who has not been exercised shouldn't be confined. That is asking for trouble.

Have you tried a plastic Vari Kennel? They are a bit more sturdy than wire crates. The doors do not bend.
