I live in Jacksonville, FL and am getting an Irish Setter puppy from somewhere near Atlanta in March. We are trying to determine if it would be easier to have him shipped to us rather than pick him up. He will be 11 weeks old at this time and probably somewhere around 20lbs. Does anyone know how possible and cost savvy this option would be? How much would it cost to have him shipped to us?

Thanks
I am a dog trainer and am aware of the effects this could have on a puppy. Trust me, it's a last resort.
Also, it's no-stop and a 40 minute flight.

Answer
Irish Setters are such a beautiful breed. I think it will be much more traumatic for the puppy to be flown to you, than it would be to go pick him up and drive back. He is going to be scared either way, but if he's with you, you will be there to comfort him, it won't be as noisy from the engines of the plane and if you drive, you can make stops along the way for the puppy to be able to go potty and poop. It will hard on the puppy either way, but I think it will be less stressful for him to be in the car than on a plane, in a crate and all alone.

You have to remember that this puppy, is going to be scared and confused at first, because he was just taken away from his mom, siblings and the only home he was familiar with and is now suddenly in a place that is unfamiliar and scary to him, with people he doesn't know yet. The plane is going to frighten him even more. He will be more comfortable in a nice and cozy crate with a bed and a blanket in the car and with someone around him.

Go pick him up and make it easier for him. Don't put him on a plane. I don't know what the cost is for shipping him, because I have never had any of my dogs shipped to me, but I'm sure it will be expensive.

Pet Transportation from Dallas TX, to Savannah GA?

inlovewith

My father who lives in Dallas TX needs to ship two small dogs (pomeranian and papillion) to me in Savannah GA (or Jacksonville FL, which ever would provide a better flight). Ive never had to deal with pet transportation and want to make sure my puppies are well taken care of and arrive to me safely. Together they weigh no more than 12-15 pounds and I want them to be crated together as they get very bad seperation anxiety. Does anyone have any information or advise for my situation?

Answer
Jacksonville is a much better choice since there are direct flights from Dallas (pretty sure for American at least, possibly others..if there happen to be direct flights into Savannah, so much the better.) Layovers can be VERY bad for pets since you never know how long they'll be sitting on the tarmac during transfer between flights. Be aware that most carriers will not accept animals at all if the temperatures are expected to be above a certain level. You may want to consider sedating them beforehand, but be sure to consult with a vet and get ones designed for dogs - human medications can have unexpected results when given to animals. (I recall a case when a woman gave some to her cat...that particular human medication had the exact opposite effect on felines and the cat created havoc on the flight.)
