What should I know when getting a dog?

I'm getting a dog today and my mom isn't so sure about what we should do when we get it. We know what supplies we need to get, where it's going to sleep, and it's schedule. Are there any other things we need to know?

The dog is an English springer spaniel.

Answer
There will be an adjustment period. Give it AT LEAST a week to settle in. The way the dog behaves the first day you bring it home is not a good indication of how it will behave the rest of its life.

You should set up a vet appointment in the next 48 hours or so. If he has anything wrong - even simple fleas or worms or needs to be spayed/neutered soon - it is better to figure it out now and nip it in the bud than wait until you've got an emergency on your hands. The vet can do a thorough exam and catch things before they're a problem, and give you recommendations on care specific to the kind of dog you're getting.

If he's old enough - done with ALL of his puppy shots, especially parvo and rabies - you should sign up for the next dog training class at a petco, petsmart, or local trainer.

On the off chance he's not already potty trained, get a simple timer and set it for every 3 hours. Make sure he goes before you bring him inside and treat him for finishing outside. Set a timer and take him out before he needs to go again, and treat him for going. Set him up to succeed and never give him a chance to have an accident inside.

Dog proof your house. Put away all wires as best as you can. Leave no towels or dirty clothes on the floor. Keep the trash in a dog proof room or have a dog proof trash can. No chocolate, no sugar free gum or nicotine gum, no grapes or raisins, no onions or garlic, move all house plants out of reach.

Only allow him in one room of the house for a few days before letting him explore more of the house, one more room every few days. It makes it less stressful on him and makes it easier for you to keep an eye on him and keep him out of trouble.

Crate him or keep him in a safe area outside whenever you are not home.

Where to buy a giant breed crate online?

ABC123

We have a giant breed puppy that only has another month for before her 48" crate (this is an XL usually) is too small and we want to buy the biggest one we can get (54").

I've looked on craigslist for months to no avail and petsmart in area does not sell ones this large.

Anyone have good websites I could order one from?

Answer
I went through a similar problem when I got my great dane. My local stores didnt carry actual crates big enough for him. We decided to get the biggest one they had and that was the 48". It is slightly small for him, but he doesnt get locked up in it unless we have to go out. (He counter surfed)
This is a forum for giant breed dog owners. www.bigdogsporch.com They have probably been through this similar problem and you may want to ask them to see where they got their crates.
