Answer
This is the link to the Kennel Club of India http://www.thekci.org/ , some parts of the site is still under construction, but I suggest that you contact them via a letter, e-mail or perhaps phonecall.

You have to ask them about how it works in India, in Sweden when you buy a purebred, registered puppy, on the day you pick up your puppy you get the following from the breeder:

a registration certificate from the Swedish Kennel Klubb,

a paper from a recent veterinarian health check (NOTE, that is not the same as that the parents to the puppy has passed any health tests),

a paper showing what vacciantions the puppy have received and that the puppy have been ID-marked by tattoo or microchip and

a sales contract.

This is how the top half of a current SKK registration certificate have looked since 2006, http://www.goldnews.se/images/regbevis.jpg , here is an example of how the whole of our current SKK registration certificates looks http://www.myrottis.se/rottweiler_clip_image001_0000.jpg .

For comparison, this is an example of how SKK's old registration certificates used to look up to 2005, http://sjolundas.dinstudio.se/files/stamexempeltom2005.jpg .
I found them through Google Image search, maybe you can do the same, but for India? http://www.google.co.in/

And last, from the Kennel Club of India's homepage, about how a breeder in India must register their litters with KCI :
"A litter can be registered only when both the parents of the pups are KCI registered dogs.Down load the litter form and "A" form from the Downloads Section www.thekci.org The "A" form must be signed by sire owner and sent to us along with the litter registration form duly filled. The fee for litter registration per puppy within 60 days is Rs.150/- and the fee for litter registration per puppy from 60-120 days is Rs.300/-. The demand draft drawn must be in favour of the "Kennel Club of India", payable at "Chennai". The litter registration form must reach KCI within 4 months from the date of birth of the pups failing which the pups will be registered in unknown parentage.

If you are not a subscriber of the `Indian Kennel Gazette', it is mandatory to subscribe for the same. Down load the subscription form from the Downloads Section www.thekci.org and the subscription fee is Rs.300/- per annum. The demand draft must be drawn in favour of the "Indian Kennel Gazette", payable at "Chennai". On receipt of the same, we shall do the needful."

Now, since I was able to find that information through sitting by my computer in little Sweden, a faraway country in the northern parts of Europe, hopefully a dedicated breeder of purebred German Shepherd Dogs in India are able to somehow find out the same information.

I've found this site from India, http://www.dogsindia.com/ .

It seems to me as if the GSD breeders listed here might be selling KCI registered puppies http://www.dogsindia.com/german_shepherd_dog.htm .

I admittedly don't know what you could expect or what important point you should look for when buying a puppy in India, but I really feel, that the following links comparison about what traits to look for in a responsible breeder and which to avoid, works regardless of which country you're from, http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/comparison.html .

Good Luck.

Traveling with my dog internationally?

Justin D

I will be going to India in the summer. I also wanted to take my pet. The trip takes around two days, with two possible stops. One at NY, and the other in Europe somewhere. Two days is an especially long time to leave our pet without food. So should I bring dog food? Maybe a small bag? Can I bring dog food? From people with experience: which is the best airline, which is the worst?

Answer
If you're only going to India for a short visit I'd make arrangments to leave your dog with friends, family or a kennel rather than subjecting it to such a harrowing trip. Changing air pressure can wreck havoc on a dog's ears, not to mention the trauma of being crated for so long.

If you're moving to India & insist on keeping your dog then before you start worrying about how to feed the poor thing during the flight there are other things you must find out first. Many countries require a quarantine for live animals entering their country. (The U.S.A. does NOT - but you have to have all sorts of documentaion for good health & vaccinations to show the Customs people before they will release your dog to you.) What are India's requirements? And what about the European city layover? What will you need for that? And will you be able to check on the dog? You may be able to in NYC, but after that, you may not see the dog again until you reach your destination.

If you still want to deal with all of that red tape & put your dog through that, then you must check with the airline for their requirements on the traveling crate for the dog. Also make sure when you book ALL your flights that the planes' holds are all heated. It gets very cold very fast in higher altitudes & you (& your dog) are going to be taking some very long flights! And you might also want to amke sure that your dog's food will not be confiscated along the way. Most countries have strict restrictions on bringing food stuff inside their borders! INCLUDING the U.S.A.
