Traveling with a dog???

SamiiLynn

What is safer for my dog when traveling 9 hrs in the car from New York to Virginia:
Being in a wire crate seat belted in the back seat of a van or in a dog harness seat belt thing in the back seat? My dog is a corgi mix.

Answer
A crate is the safest place for him.

When you stop for rests, make sure his collar is a little tighter than normal so there is no chance of him slipping out of it. And make sure you have up-to-date tag information on him.

Dogs can get freaked out by strange surroundings, so make sure you keep him close when you're there and at rest-stops during the trip.

Tips for taking a dog on a road trip?

I plan on taking a road trip from South Florida to New York and I'm bringing my Yorkie with me. He has been on car rides before, the longest 1 1/2 hours. All the time my yorkie rides in the back with another passenger. I don't plan on staying in a hotel, just driving straight to NY, with breaks for gas, and food. The road trip can take anywhere from 19-24 hours. What are some helpful tips I can use?

Answer
When you travel with dogs it's not unlike traveling with kids. you need to be flexible. You may have to stop when the dog needs to, not when it is convenient. That's a long time to drive and you may not be in the best of moods many hours in, which may mean you may not want to deal with you dogs needs especially if they come up often. Your dog may have an upset stomach, or just get bored being that long in a car. That can lead to a lot of barking and or whining. I have traveled with my dogs for long trips. I have enjoyed doing so a lot. But each dog if different. My Scottie was a lot of fun, he loved seeing each new place when we stopped. My standard poodle found travel nerve racking. While traveling he slept a lot due to the stress. When we stopped for the night he had to go out several times. He went out at bed time and then I think it was 2, 4, and around 6 something. Needless to say i was very tired after driving all day and those many hikes out to a grass spot in the freezing temps of December were not making me cheery. Good luck. I hope you have someone traveling with you if there is a problem. I crate my dogs for travel. This is safer for the dog, and if there is a mess to deal with then it's easy to clean up. bring lots of water, food, and old towels. Your leash and contact information on your dogs tags.
