Any small dog breeders in USA?

Q. I am currently looking for REAL dog breeders I completely disapprove of puppy mills, or if you are not a breeder and just had pups that is acceptable as well. Any toy bread dogs at a reasonable price meaning I don't want to pay 800 for a Yorkie and theres no pedigree or medical papers (LOL) I hope for someone local I live in North Carolina so I am willing to travel from here as far down as Georgia as for north as Virgina, as far west as Kentucky (sp?) thanks. (I don't like shipping of animals I prefer pick-up)

Answer
If you are looking for a real breeder, don't do this way, because you will have every Tom, Dick and Harry offering you dog that are breeding strictly for profit witrhout cqare for the dogs they breed

First research which small breeds will best fit into your family, just because they are small does not make them all the same, some willl be very yappy and protective of home and are wary of strangers, some are laid back and playful and love people, some are high energy requiring a lot of exercise and other breeds do not. Some are cuddler and others very independent. So the first thing to do is decide what you want from a dog and find a breed with those attributes once you have narrowed it down, then contact the AKC to locate breeders in your area. also learn what genetic problems are common in the breed, a lot of the small breeds can have very expensive to treat genetic health problems and surgery to correct if you end up getting a poorly bred one can run into the thousands of dollars, most knee and hip problems the surgeries start at $2500, so sometimes looking for a cheap pup will cost you a lot more in the long run

The OFA website has a listing of dogs by breed that have genetic testing done that indicate the status of the results it can be a great resource, in finding the best breeder by looking at the dogs registered name that often includes the breeder kennel name
http://www.offa.org/

This shows yorkshire terriers and some of the common names I see in the list is Allure, Alamar, Camelot and Bryn and by clicking on one of the Bryn dogs it brings up more names to check Goodpuppy and Lemire and gives the results of testing
I can even use the name of the pups and check the test result of their eyes thru the CERF registry to see if they have eye problems that could lead to blindness
http://www.vmdb.org/cerf.html but it lets me know the qulaity of the breeders dogs

I can then try googling the names I found along with the word yorkshire or contact the AKC to see if have contact info for the breeder

http://www.camelot-yorkies.com/past_stars.htm

When you find a breeder find out what genetic testing was done and ask to see proof

It is important you do not want to be in the shoes of the person that wrote here this morning she recently lost one min-pin to congential heart failure and had gotten a another puppy only to find it also has and will likely die within a year, so obtaining a pup from a breeder who genetically tests before breeding helps to ensure the pup bred to them will be healthy and can save you possibly thousands in vets costs or loss of the pup at an early age a health guarantee without proof is meaningless all it guarantees is that you can get your purchase price back or a replacement pup not any costs that was invested in a pup like vacinations deworming, neutering otr any other vet costs etc and could you own a pup for a year find out their is a problem then and just simply return it? most people cannot they have become too attached so they are then force to pay vet costs themselves.

I am not saying you will not get a response here from a reputable breeder but chance are extremely high you won't only about 1% of breeders are truly reputable most are doing as a means to profit not to improve a breed, and many would make excellent used car salesmen/women

THis breeder offers advice on what questions to ask to ensure you are buying from a reputable breeder
